Description
This class teaches the Concealed Handgun License (CHL) applicant: Firearms safety, Texas laws regarding CHL and use of force, proper firearms storage and non-violent dispute resolution techniques.
Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a Certificate of Training (CHL-100) which is required by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to file an application for a Concealed Handgun License.
You may complete the Texas DPS online application prior to or after attending the Texas Defensive Firearms Training class.

Required Equipment
- Eye and ear protection
- A handgun of at least .32 cal. It is recommend that you qualify with a semi-auto, rather than a revolver.
- 50 rounds of ammunition (proficiency course is 50 rounds)
- A cap or visor
- A holster, gun case, or something to keep your pistol in when moving to and between the firing lines on the range.
- Range appropriate footwear and clothing
- Hydration (water)

Applying for a Texas CHL

The application process for the Texas Concealed Handgun License is fairly straight forward.
- Register for one of our CHL classes (Click here or Call 817-975-0315 to check scheduling and availability)
- Complete Texas Application for a CHL at the DPS Concealed Handgun website
- Click on Downloadable Forms and download or print:
- CHL-6 Photo Holder/ID Signature.
- CHL-16 Texas Concealed Handgun Laws.
- If your place of birth was outside of the United States review CHL-40 Notice - Non-Immigrant - Visa.
- If you are a senior citizen, military, judge, peace officer, or prosecutor, please see the schedule of licensing fees to determine the available discounts and the supplemental documentation required.
- Click Apply for a New Concealed Handgun License. You will need:
- Texas Driver License or Texas Identification card.
- Social Security Number.
- Residences and employment information for the past five years.
- Information regarding any psychiatric, drug, alcohol, or criminal history.
- A credit card.
- Print Receipt from online application (form with barcode)
- Click on Downloadable Forms and download or print:
- Wait 12-24 hours for your application to process with DPS and L-1 Identity Solutions
- Schedule an appointment with L-1 Identity Solutions for fingerprinting.
- Have your prints scanned by L-1 Identity Solutions. Their prints are 98% reliable, and they instantly transmit them to DPS.
- Notes:
- L-1 does not take walk-ins, you must make an appointment.
- L-1 cannot take your prints until DPS has received your application.
- As of March 1, 2011 TX DPS will only accept fingerprints from L-1 Identity Solutions (the current TX DPS approved fingerprinting contractor)
