This course teaches the basic fundamental skills required for using a pistol in self defense.

  • Selection: Choosing vests, belts, pouches, holsters, etc.
  • Placement: Optimum placement locations for holster, pouches, etc.

The Basics

  • Gun Safety
  • Gun and Ammo storage
  • Properly Loading and Unloading of a Firearm
  • Verbal commands
  • De-escalation
  • Using handgun sights (sight picture, hold over, adjustment)
  • Drawing from concealment safely and efficiently
  • Trigger control
  • Malfunction clearing
  • Reloading

Street Mechanics

  • Drawing from a concealed holster
  • Shooting from retention
  • Shooting from cover (stationary shooting positions)
  • Other (Low Cover, non-standard stances, etc.)
  • Shooting on the move

Required Equipment

  • Eye and ear protection
  • A reliable defensive pistol (that you are comfortable shooting)
  • A belt or paddle mounted strong-side holster
  • A quality belt
  • 3 magazines or speed-loaders
  • 2 magazine / speed-loader pouches
  • 300 rounds of ammunition
  • Range appropriate footwear and clothing
  • Hydration (water)

Optional Equipment

  • A bag to practice drawing from such as, a purse, backpack or Maxpedition bag
  • Sun Screen
  • Bug Spray
  • Weather appropriate clothing (rain gear, cold weather gear)
  • Beverages / Snacks


NRA Basic Pistol class or the equivalent basic pistol training or shooting experience.
